My Kid Graduated Kindergarten – It Happened Way Too Fast

My son Colin and I were driving around at the beginning of August 2022. Colin was very nervous. "I hate Kindergarten! No! I don't want to go!" Needless to say, he was not very pumped about leaving his incredible daycare teacher Miss Tricia and "moving on up" to the big show.

We did what we could to prepare him for it. Read him Kindergarten books. Talked about all the fun he would have. He got to meet his teacher Mrs. Revuelto before the first day of school, and visit his class for the first time. He let his guard down slowly, but it was certainly still there.

Weeks of paranoia led us to the big day. August 8th. The first day of the rest of Colin's life. He was about to walk through the threshold without holding his parents hands for the first time. It was an emotional day (for all of us)...

Then... in an instant, it was May 19th. Out walks Colin onto the graduation stage... taller, more confident. His months of "higher education" at Tyrone Thompson Elementary School (a school I would put up against any in the valley, public or otherwise) had shaped him. There was the gifted drawing that made his heart sing. The kid that tried to manipulate him. The trepidation of a "new thing," something he's been pretty against, turning into the excitement for the next day. Much of that credit goes to an incredible educator in Mrs. Revuelto who, after the graduation, had a chant of her name from all the parents in the class to her blushes. It is teachers like Mrs. R that CCSD needs to make sure they retain and compensate. We cannot rave enough.

It took nine months but it may have well taken nine seconds. In a blink, he was a year older. His worries no longer about Kindergarten, but leaving it behind for 1st grade.

His teacher gave him the "kind heart" award. "He is just making sure they always have a friend," Mrs. R said before handing out the laminated hardware. As a parent who was bullied during a lot of his time in school... I cannot tell you how proud that made me. My son is exactly who I hoped he would be, and so much more.

I cannot believe how fast the time flies. If you are not a parent quite yet, or about to become one, take heed. The time does, indeed, go faster. Hours take minutes. Soak it all up.

We warn you, this week on Aimee+Shawn featured their biggest on-air argument yet. What was it about?! We'll tell you towards the end.

Meantime, the week started with Shawn describing a murder he witnessed with his family this week. The scene of the crime? Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. The victim? A fish who happened to swim in front of two sharks that were hungry.

Aimee had the humiliating moment where her debit card got declined in front of people... something that happened to Shawn recently too. Is there any worse feeling? Probably, but when it is happening to you it feels awful in the moment!

This week brought us the return of grasshoppers - Aimee's top foe. Aimee explains why the harmless little jumpers are, in fact, her biggest fear and why they all need to be eradicated from existence.

Shawn has a trip to the northeast coming soon, and he's in a predicament. Nearly 20 years ago, he got a speeding ticket in the state of Maine. Through confusion and mismanagement from the state, Shawn could never contest the ticket and his right to drive in the state was taken away. But... Maine is tucked up there in the corner so Shawn hasn't had to think about it. Well... things have changed and now Shawn must travel to "Vacationland" and he's unsure if he'll get arrested if he does. Better check that out...

Finally, Aimee started the show on Thursday with a fairly innocent "happy Friday to you!" (he had Friday off). This set Shawn off on a nit-picky conversation about how he hates when people pay "fast and loose" with the calendar. Listeners then weighed in on what could be the dumbest argument in radio history.

All she wanted to do was relax on a hammock. Turns out Aimee was almost put under arbor-rest.

Both Aimee and Shawn had to deal with massive blows to their ego recently when they swiped their debit card, only to have it declined. They had the money, but the card wasn't having it.

Shawn was astounded by how curt his waiter was on Mother's Day... Aimee can empathize. She did his job and knows how hard it can be.

They are her biggest fear, and they are back en masse. Grasshoppers are back and Aimee is not happy about it.

Some people believe in a good luck charm. Some people are a bit superstitious. Others... should be committed.

He got in a disagreement with the state over a ticket, and Shawn hasn't been back for nearly two decades. Now... Shawn has to go back and he's wondering if he'll be arrested if he does.

Seriously, how does an ass slide to unlock?!

Somehow this innocuous comment from Aimee turned into the biggest argument the show ever had.

Shawn will avoid checking a bag in like the plague... even if his mom is in one of them.

Shawn never had a kindergarten graduation. Aimee did, and was under the presumption that everyone else did too. Turns out... not so much.

It's been a long week of shows on Aimee+Shawn, but not nearly as long as Shawn's dad's drive from Las Vegas back to Boston.

We checked in with Donny T who made it back to Boston safely, but unfortunately was met with a stinky surprise when he walked into his house. Yuck.

Aimee is absolutely baffled by her friend who found it necessary to ask her husband about changing her hair color. She wanted to go from blonde to brunette and thought she should check with the hubs first. Aimee would never... but Shawn appreciates the courtesy.

Shawn was driving out of his subdivision over the weekend and he was met with the most glorious sight: a large metal horse statue - headless - being schlepped on the back of a pickup truck. Whose horse is this and what are they doing with it?! Shawn needs to know.

There is a terrible story in Utah about a woman who wrote a children's book about handling grief after her husband died. Well... she's been arrested for his murder and Aimee's eyes lit up like it was Christmas. Her true crime obsession has really gotten bad.

Shawn wanted to get ahead of the game for Mother's Day and took one of his sons out to go shopping. A quick trip to go to CVS and grab some cards and... wait. How did Shawn find the one CVS in the world that had no greeting cards. None whatsoever. He also went to a KFC without chicken one time. What is life!?

Speaking of mothers, Happy Mother's Day to the moms out there! Aimee celebrated her Mother's Day (observed) doing whatever she wanted. She earned it.

It took what felt like forever, but Donny T returned to Boston! Only to find his fridge broke while he was gone and the place reeks.

We thought the plan was settled... turns out it wasn't.

Aimee never thought she'd see the day. Turns out the anti-tattoo mama is ready for her first ink.

Shawn is concerned for Aimee's well-being. When she hears of terrible tragedies, murders and missing persons cases her first reaction is "NICE". That's an issue.

Last week, the Instagram couple that Aimee had been following like a hawk broke up out of nowhere. Now she is getting to the bottom of it.

There are some things that are massive turnoffs for both sexes. We go down a list and come up with our own...

It turns out the A's are now looking at the Tropicana for their ballpark?! Shawn is convinced they aren't coming at this point.

The traffic will suck. Blowing up the historic property that has its own street sucks. The whole thing just sucks.

Aimee finds she is overcharged quite often at the grocery store, but the amount she is overcharged is never enough to go back in and fix it.

There are some things you just expect to be... so when they aren't you're shocked if not offended. Shawn was getting ahead on his Mother's Day shopping and he was hit with a shock.

She helped a friend move out... now she's helping a friend move back in... and she's got quite the relationship with her movers.

After seeing the trouble her ex's son is getting into... Aimee's thankful she's married to Patrick.

Ah the Las Vegas Strip... home to the Bellagio Fountains... and some random dude's "fountain"...

Shawn had to get a check-up this week... and the awkward conversations were in full force.
