Marty McFly had just gotten back to 1985. His dad was no longer a pushover. Mom was no longer a drunk. His girlfriend Jennifer was all over him... then Doc returned. Wait. What is it NOW?! Well, we'll tell you what it is now... it's Back To The Future day!
On this day in 2015, Marty, Doc and Jennifer hopped in a "flying Delorean" and blasted off to 30 years in the future. Marty's kids were in trouble, and something had to be done. This was the beginning of Back To The Future Part II which brought the world so many memorable moments and merch.
From Hoverboards to Pepsi Perfect, Mr. Fusion to flying camera drones, it was one of the most realistic depictions of "the future" ever shown on the silver screen. Sure, not everything panned out (they missed the Cubs winning the World Series by one year) but it got a lot more right than it didn't.
There's a lot of secrets behind the franchise
The trilogy is one of the most beloved movie franchises in history, but there are many things you might not know about the movie. Did you know Michael J Fox was not the original actor to play Marty? Did you know the time machine was originally not going to be a Delorean at all, but something far lamer?! How about a kid pointing at his crotch?! You catch that?!
There are so many hidden easter eggs and surprises behind the production of the film that many may have missed... so we've got a collection of some of the biggest Back To The Future surprises below. Whether you're a diehard fan or a space-time continuum novice, you might learn a thing or two. If you know it all, then you can make like a tree, and get outta here! Butthead!
The Original Time Machine Was... A Refrigerator
The original drafts of the script had a refrigerator in the "starring role" as time machine. Needless to say, this would have been a terrible idea. Ford attempted to buy their way into the film with a Mustang, but executive producer Bob Gale was having none of it: ‘No, no, no, Doc Brown doesn’t drive a f***ing Mustang.’ Instead, it was a Delorean. A decision that had the founder of Delorean Motor Cars eternally grateful.
Marty McFly Was Originally Played By... Eric Stoltz
The movie's producers, the director, the studio... they all wanted Michael J Fox. But Mike was busy with "Family Ties". So they went with their second choice: Eric Stoltz. Yeah, the guy who played Rocky Dennis. Needless to say, a few weeks in the realized it wasn't working out. They scrambled, got Michael J Fox and filmed many of his scenes at night with the little time he had available, re-filmed nearly all of Eric's scenes (there's a fragment of him in one scene) and the rest is history.
They Filmed Back To The Future 2 & 3 Simultaneously
They knew after the success of the original Back To The Future that there'd be a sequel. (Although the "To Be Continued..." at the end of Part I was only added to the home video copies, not in the original theatrical release). So, they filmed a sequel. Two of them. At the same time. That had never happened before. Part II brought us to "the future"... and Part III brought us to the "old west". That was a dream fulfilled for Michael J Fox who always wanted to be in a western.
Marty McFly Is Older Than His Dad
It's weird, but it's true. Michael J Fox who plays Marty is actually three years older than Crispin Glover who plays his father. Weird. It's OK though, he's about a week younger than Lea Thompson who plays his mom...
The Dad Changed After Part I...
Crispin Glover, the actor that played Marty's dad in Part I, supposedly asked for a lot of money to return for the sequel. So... they told him to pound sand. They re-cast the dad in the following movie. Although, Crispin says in the interview above that the story is false.
...So Did His Girlfriend
Jennifer was played by Claudia Wells in the first movie. After her mother was diagnosed with cancer, she put the career on pause. The studio recast Jennifer with Elizabeth Shue. Tough to tell the difference until you see it side by side.
Huey Lewis Thinks Marty Is Too Darn Loud
When you think "Back To The Future", you think Huey Lewis. "The Power Of Love" and "Back In Time" were absolute hits that were integral to the pop culture success of the movie. But did you know Huey is actually in the film? He plays the "square" teacher who poo-poos Marty's band for the talent show.
Steven Spielberg Is NOT The Director
You see Steven Spielberg's name right at the top of the movie, but nope. He was executive producer, not director. That belongs to Robert Zemeckis, who has directed among other things, "Forrest Gump".
The two actually disagree on Part II. Zemeckis loved it. Spielberg, not so much.
Disney Passed On The Flick...
Disney, along with several other movie studios, passed on the film. Hmm, why would Disney pass? Oh, probably because Marty's mom tries to sleep with him. Yeah, that's it.
The Name Of The Movie Was Almost "Space Man From Pluto"
The head of the studio thought "Back To The Future" was a weak name, and "Space Man From Pluto" would be a better fit. Can you imagine... that name... with a refrigerator as a time machine and Eric Stoltz starring? Painful.
Christopher Lloyd Almost Turned Down The Role As Doc
GREAT SCOTT! The "Taxi" star almost passed on the role until Robert Zemeckis convinced him otherwise. Thank goodness.
Michael J Fox Didn't Sing Or Play Guitar
He took guitar lessons so he could fake it well. But he didn't play it. And he didn't sing a note either, that was a singer named Mark Chapman. Ah, Hollywood.
Elijah Wood's First Appearance In A Film Is In Back To The Future Part II
That's like a baby's toy!
One Of Doc's Kids Had To Take A Leak...
Look at that kid, :21 seconds in. He motions off-camera and points at his crotch to tell staff he had to pee. No one caught it. It's in the movie to this day. Hysterical.
