When looking back on the music career of Miley Cyrus, it's hard to believe that it has already been almost 16 years since her debut album "Meet Miley Cyrus" was released. It feels like only yesterday we were singing along with “Party in the USA” and twerking to “We Can't Stop.” But just like us, Miley has grown up over the years. Before diving into the top 10 Miley Cyrus songs of all time, let's take a look at how one of our favorite pop stars has changed and evolved since she first hit the scene.

The Disney Years

Miley Cyrus first gained recognition as the title character on Disney Channel original series, "Hannah Montana." The show ran from 2006 through 2011, and during its run, Miley released numerous albums under the Hannah Montana name (that's a whole other can of worms - click here to explore her Hannah Montana career and discography). That said, during this period, she also released numerous albums and singles under her own name. Some of her biggest and most successful tracks came out of this era, including "Party In The U.S.A.," “The Climb,” and “7 Things.” All of these songs spoke to her young audience, delivering positive messages about self-empowerment and friendship.

The Breakout Star

In 2013, Miley officially became an adult when she dropped her breakout album, "Bangerz." With this new project, she shed her good girl image by embracing a wilder persona that was heavily influenced by hip-hop culture — something she had been hinting at with her 2011 single “Who Owns My Heart?” On Bangerz, she featured several A-list artists such as Britney Spears, Big Sean, French Montana, Future, Ludacris, and Nelly while delivering more sexually charged lyrics that weren't suitable for kids anymore. This new era of Miley made headlines around the world with outrageous performances on award shows like MTV VMAs and even more outrageous fashion choices which included nipple pasties (...and nothing else).

Finding Herself Again

Once Bangerz faded away into obscurity, Miley began to focus less on partying and more on making music that mattered to her personally. 2015 saw the release of her fifth studio album, "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz," which was much different than anything she had ever done before. It featured psychedelic rock production from Flaming Lips frontman, Wayne Coyne, as well as experimental lyrics about gender roles and sexuality (it was also available for free online). She followed up Dead Petz two years later with "Younger Now," an electropop album that showed off a softer side of herself — one that wasn't trying so hard to prove something or fit into any particular box, musically or artistically. It featured her top-ten single, "Malibu," which found huge success.

The Miley Of Today

Miley Cyrus has been on a roll these past few years, putting out different sounds with each of her albums. From the release of her rock/glam rock album, "Plastic Hearts," to the recent debut of her eighth studio album with a pop/dance pop feel, "Endless Summer Vacation," Miley has continued her legacy as a legendary musician. She continues to experiment with her sound, and we can't get enough!

While it's tough to name the top 10 Miley Cyrus songs of all time, it ultimately must be done. Or... at least be attempted. It's so difficult to pick favorites when all of her songs have garnered so much success and are honestly ALL absolute bops. But, alas.

The Top 10 Miley Cyrus Songs Of All Time:

10) "Malibu"

This track will have you feeling like you're sitting beachside, watching the waves and feeling like a sentimental, emotional mess. And we love it. This song from "Younger Now" (2017) will always be a fan favorite.

9) "When I Look At You"

Now, this one is unique, as it is from "The Last Song" soundtrack, in which Miley played the lead role in 2010. It stands today as one of her most timeless and beautiful works as an artist and musician.

8) "Hoedown Throwdown"

OK. I know what you're thinking... This one seems a little ridiculous to be named a top 10. Trust me, it's not. This song single-handedly had every 8-year-old girl in America putting their hawk in the sky and moving side-to-side. It earned it's place.

7) "See You Again"

Straight off of her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus (2007), this track was everything to her young fans. And if you were a little to old in 2007 to be parked in front of the TV every single night watching Disney Channel and hearing this song play every three seconds... Let me tell you. You missed out. Ah, better times.

6) "We Can't Stop"

You can't deny this absolute bop of a track off of Bangerz (2013). We all know we danced to it, like, a thousand times. And we all know we were obsessed with this music video.

5) "The Climb"

Straight from Hannah Montana: The Movie, this song spoke to fans across generations. Truly, a timeless Miley classic.

4) "Midnight Sky"

This track from Miley's 2020 album, "Plastic Hearts" features her taking on more of a rock/glam rock sound. And to say the least... She knocked it out of the park with this track. We dig the vibe, Miley!

3) "Wrecking Ball"

Another treasure off of Miley's Bangerz album released in 2013. The song itself is fabulous and garnered huge success, but the music video had EVERYONE talking.

2) "Party In The U.S.A."

If you're even an ounce surprised right now, you've totally forgotten the absolute chokehold this song had on the world when it released in 2009. This track has always gone HARD.

1) "Flowers"

And the number one song... Undeniably her uplifting, empowering, and already highly successful track off of her most recent album, Endless Summer Vacation (2023). If you haven't heard it yet, two things: 1) What rock have you been under? And 2) You must listen. Immediately.
